- Cobalt blue glass bottles connect ancient luxury, scientific innovation, and cultural history. The vibrant color comes from adding cobalt oxide to molten glass. This technique originated around 2000 BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt to mimic rare lapis lazuli stone. Because early production was expensive, these items were initially reserved for the wealthy. However, the 1800s transformed cobalt glass into a mass-produced utilitarian staple. Apothecaries discovered that the deep blue hue blocked harmful ultraviolet light, preventing medicines from degrading. During the Victorian era, the glass became a safety standard for hazardous substances. Manufacturers molded these poison bottles with distinct ribs or diamond patterns so people could identify danger by touch in the dark. By the mid-20th century, iconic commercial brands adopted the striking color for instant brand recognition. This led to memorable packaging like Bromo-Seltzer bottles, Vicks VapoRub and Noxzema jars, and the signature cornflower blue of Phillips' Milk of Magnesia!
