- This vintage light green glass bottle originated from the Sterling Spring Mineral Water Co., a successful regional beverage manufacturer that operated in Hancock, Michigan, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Serving the Houghton and Hancock areas during the height of the local copper mining boom, the company's evolution can be tracked through the distinct monograms embossed on its antique bottles. The bottling works was spearheaded from 1897 to 1906 by Peter Larsen, whose era is identified by a "P L" monogram. Control then shifted to a partnership between his son, Henry Larsen, and Hans Johnson from 1907 to 1911, which produced bottles marked with an "L J" monogram. Henry Larsen eventually bought out Johnson to become the sole proprietor from 1911 to 1912, leaving behind a rare line of bottles bearing an "H L" monogram. Under Henry's solo leadership, the factory at 511 Hancock Street was modernized in April 1911 by replacing steam power with electricity to run the machinery. At its peak, the thriving business employed 25 workers and expanded its production beyond mineral water to manufacture a diverse array of flavored sodas.
