- Step back into the 1930s with this gorgeous piece of history! 🌸 This "Petal Green" salad plate—affectionately known to collectors as Petalware—was first crafted by the Mount Clemens Pottery Company back in 1935 as an affordable, beautiful staple for American homes during the Depression era. Founded in Michigan in 1915 to boost the local economy, the factory grew into a manufacturing powerhouse backed by S.S. Kresge (the precursor to Kmart), which sent these lovely dishes to five-and-dime stores across the nation. The design is famous for its embossed, scalloped rim that mimics overlapping flower petals, making a full stacked place setting look just like a blooming flower. Riding the wave of the 1930s colorful dinnerware craze, Mount Clemens coated these 9 1/4 inch plates in a rich, semi-glossy "Depression Green" glaze, later mixing them with other colors for their vibrant "Old Madrid" line. Because these were used hard as everyday dishes, finding pristine pieces today is a real treasure hunt. Just what we do best!!!
The factory sadly closed its doors for good in 1986, meaning every genuine piece is a true survivor, with this specific Petal Green line boasting an incredible 90-year legacy! Found by yours truly, Ed the Diver & Christie B.!
