- The iconic aqua-colored, embossed glass A.1. Sauce bottle dates primarily from the late 1910s through the 1930s, chronicling a pivotal era when production expanded from England to the United States. The sauce itself originates back to 1824, when Henderson William Brand, a chef to King George IV of England, created a blend so exceptional the king declared it "A.1." (meaning first-class), prompting its commercial launch under Brand & Co. in Mayfair, London. By the early 20th century, these bottles achieved their distinct ice-blue or light aqua tint because they were blown using glass containing natural iron impurities left untreated by clarifying agents. This aesthetic marked a major transition in 1906 when G.F. Heublein & Bro. acquired the rights to import and eventually manufacture the condiment in America. Today, collectors frequently identify these American-made aqua bottles by the Illinois Glass Company maker's mark—an "I" inside a diamond—stamped on the base, which definitively places their production between 1915 and 1929 to house the newly localized sauce.
