We cleaned it the best we could and any other remnants just add more character and charm to this conversation starter of a piece! There is scratching throughout this bottle! Best part, is there are beautiful air bubbles throughout it, making it even more iconic!
-This antique glass bottle from the Leisen & Henes Brewing Co. of Menominee, Michigan, are highly prized pieces of Upper Peninsula ("U.P.") breweriana. Dating strictly to the pre-Prohibition era, these returnable-style bottles carry a rich history tied to a massive innovation in the global beer bottling industry. The business originally began as the Leisen & Henes Brewery in 1876. Following structural fires and reorganizations, it officially incorporated as the Leisen & Henes Brewing Co. in 1891. It served the region for 28 years until Michigan went dry ahead of national Prohibition, forcing a merger into the United Beverage Co. in 1919. Because the brewery operated under this specific corporate name for a limited window, any bottle embossed with "Br'g Co." can be reliably dated between 1891 and 1919. Most collectible Leisen & Henes bottles feature the brewery’s distinct and grammatically quirky slogan: “The Best What Is” (or occasionally varied as "The Best What Gives"). The slogan was coined by a local man named Bauer during a public marketing contest held by the brewery. Management loved the phrase so much they made it a staple boilerplate for all of their embossed glass! And we found this gem lying on the bottom of the Menominee River!
