- Founded in 1870 in North Berwick, Maine, by former shoemaker James Lewis Prescott, the J.L. Prescott Company began with shoe polish before transitioning into stove polish after acquiring the Green Leaf Company. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, cast-iron stoves required constant maintenance to prevent intense heat from turning the iron a dull, rusty white. The company’s specialized liquid polish solved this by restoring a rich, glossy black shine and protecting against rust, eventually fueling its growth into a massive, multi-generational family empire. Although operations centered in Passaic, New Jersey, by the late 1890s, the business maintained significant offices and manufacturing hubs in New York, which explains why many of its early bottles feature a "New York" or "J.L. Prescott Co. N.Y." stamp. At the height of its success, it stood as the largest stove polish factory in the world.
