- The history of the W. Hamm & Son bottling company—often misspelled as "Whamm"—is deeply intertwined with the early 20th-century beverage industry of Appleton, Wisconsin. The business was established by Wenzel Hamm and his son, John F. Hamm, following Wenzel's relocation from the New London Bottling Works to Appleton in 1901. By 1909, the duo expanded their local footprint by acquiring the Dambruch Bottling Co. and officially renaming their operation W. Hamm & Son. Operating out of their facility at 622 N. Division Street, the Hamms ran the company until their passing in the 1930s, though a soft drink manufacturing license was granted under the business name as late as June 1938.
Today, the vintage green glass bottles produced by W. Hamm & Son between the 1910s and 1930s are highly prized items among Wisconsin antique collectors. Designed during a peak era for local soda and mineral water bottlers before national franchises dominated the market, these heavy, thick-walled containers were built to withstand both intense carbonation pressures and industrial washing for refilling. While the company also produced clear glass, rare footed seltzer bottles, and unique 8-sided amber bases, their vibrant emerald and aqua green glass bottles—typically embossed with "W. HAMM & SON APPLETON, WIS."—served as the standard packaging for their signature flavored sodas, phosphates, and mineral waters
