- The vintage Ball Perfect Mason aqua blue canning jar stands as one of the most iconic pieces of American utilitarian history. Produced primarily between 1913 and 1933 by the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company, the jar is most famous for its unique aqua color, officially known as "Ball Blue." This signature hue was actually a beautiful accident resulting from the raw materials used in production. The Ball brothers harvested sand from the massive Hoosier Slide sand dune on the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana. During the melting process, a unique blend of natural minerals within that specific sand interacted to create the distinct aqua shade. By the 1920s, over-mining caused the Hoosier Slide dune to vanish completely. However, the company had stockpiled enough sand to continue manufacturing the aqua glass until roughly 1937, after which production switched entirely to clear glass!
