- Antique German porcelain serving dish from the Victorian or Edwardian era, specifically dating between 1887 and 1949. This timeframe represents a golden age of production, adaptation, and dramatic geopolitical shifts for German porcelain makers, meaning this piece's context is closely tied to international trade laws and major historical milestones. The significance of this period begins in 1887 with the passing of the British Merchandise Marks Act. This law required all imported goods from Germany to be stamped with "Made in Germany" to protect British manufacturers from cheap foreign imports; however, the strategy backfired when the stamp quickly became synonymous with high-quality craftsmanship, excellent materials, and great value, acting as an unintended seal of quality. Shortly after, the United States passed the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, which similarly required the country of origin to be clearly printed on all imports, meaning that if your dish simply says "Germany" or "Made in Germany," it was definitively produced after 1887.)
